Questions

Common questions about Peru eSIM

What is an eSIM and how is it different from a physical SIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM card built into your phone. Instead of inserting a plastic card, you scan a QR code and the eSIM installs directly onto your device. Most phones from 2018 onwards support eSIM, including all iPhones from XS and newer.

How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?

The 30-second check: Open Settings → Cellular (iPhone) or Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs (Android). If you see “Add eSIM” or “Add SIM”, your phone supports it.

The quick answer by model: iPhone XS and newer (all models), Google Pixel 3 and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20+ and newer, and most flagship Motorola, OnePlus, and Xiaomi phones from 2018+. Your phone also needs to be unlocked — carrier-locked devices won’t accept third-party eSIMs.

One exception: iPhones bought in mainland China don’t have eSIM hardware at all.

Do I need to install the eSIM before traveling?

Yes — install before you fly, while you’re still on home Wi-Fi. Installation requires an internet connection to download the eSIM profile, and you don’t want to be stuck at the airport without a working SIM trying to install one.

The good news: installing doesn’t start your plan. The validity countdown only begins when your phone actually connects to a local network in Peru. So you can install days or weeks before your trip without losing any data or days.

Can I use WhatsApp with this eSIM?

Yes — WhatsApp, iMessage, Telegram, Signal, FaceTime, Zoom, and any other internet-based messaging or calling app all work normally. They use the eSIM’s data connection just like they would on home Wi-Fi.

Your WhatsApp account stays linked to your home phone number (no need to register a new number) because WhatsApp authenticates by account, not by which SIM is active.

Does this eSIM include calls or SMS?

No — this is a data-only eSIM. No traditional phone minutes or SMS allowance. For calls and texts, you have two great options:

1. Use internet calls/messages — WhatsApp, FaceTime, iMessage all work over the eSIM’s data and are free.

2. Keep your home SIM active for calls/SMS — your travel eSIM runs alongside your regular SIM. Banks, 2FA codes, and anyone calling your real number all reach you on your home line. (Just turn off “Data Roaming” on the home line to avoid roaming charges.)

What happens if I use all my data?

Your data simply stops — no surprise charges, no auto-top-up, no overage fees. The eSIM stays installed on your phone; the connection just goes inactive.

To get more data: come back to this page and buy another plan. The new plan stacks on top of the expired one and starts the moment the previous plan ends (or immediately if it’s already out of data). You can keep stacking as needed throughout your trip.

Can I keep my regular phone number and apps?

Yes. Your travel eSIM runs alongside your regular SIM. You keep your phone number, and apps like WhatsApp, iMessage, and your email all continue working as usual. Most travelers set the eSIM for data and keep their home line for calls and texts.

What’s your refund policy?

If your eSIM hasn’t been activated yet, we’ll refund you in full — no questions. Once activated and used on a network, refunds aren’t possible because the data is already provisioned. Read our full refund policy.

Best uses for a Peru eSIM

  • Maps and navigation. Step-by-step directions in unfamiliar cities, restaurant search, public transit routing.
  • Messaging and calls. WhatsApp, iMessage, Signal, Telegram — all work the same as at home.
  • Translation apps. Real-time translation when ordering food or asking for directions.
  • Rideshare and bookings. Local Uber/Bolt/taxi apps, last-minute hotel and flight changes.
  • Sharing the trip. Posting photos, video calls home, livestreaming.

Travel tips for Peru

  • Install before you fly. Set up the eSIM while you’re still on home Wi-Fi — you’ll be online the moment you land.
  • Save your home line for calls. Use the eSIM for data only and keep your regular SIM for calls and SMS from your bank.
  • Turn off “Roaming” on your home line. Prevents accidental charges from background apps using cellular data.
  • Keep airline mode off. The eSIM activates only when it sees a local network — if your phone is in airplane mode, nothing happens.
  • Top up if you need more. Out of data? Buy another plan and stack it — previous plan ends, new one starts.
